We list many of the programs and applications we use to craft the assets in our games.
Many of these are used my our freelancers, and some are used in-house.

3D Creation and Animation
www.anim8or.com
This simple but powerful creation package is one of the easier applications to use, though it sorely lacks the panache and feel of higher-priced/well-developed 3D rendering and animation packages out there.  With a few tutorials and videos to peruse, this is strictly for the beginner IMHO but can be used by experts to one-off or prototype varying 3D assets.
3D Creation, Rendering, Animation and Game Scripting IDE
www.blender.org
This strange-looking IDE is one of the better, more-intelligent IDEs available for any 3D development project.  Taking more time to acquaint yourself to this IDE and Python scripting is required to make Blender work best for you.  Using this system, many have created cartoons, animated shorts and even games scripting their assets with the included Python text modules.  For more information, please look for the "Blender Art Magazine", the "Blender School" and additional plug-ins and add-ons.
3D Creation, Rendering and Animation
www.turbosquid.com
This stripped-down version of AutoDesk's 3ds Max package was one of the newest 3D rendering and animation packages I had my hands on...  Easy to use and muck about in, following the tutorials was a veritable plus!  There are plug-ins and add-ons for various 3D gaming packages (i.e. Doom, Quake, Unreal...) and some to export to ".X" and ".D3D" assets.  This is one 3D package, being FREE, that can be tied to "TurboSquid Tentacles" for the inclusion of other's assets to create your 3D worlds.
3D World/Realm Creation and Rendering
cartographyshop.thegamecreators.com
Now in its 4th iteration, this newly FREE resource for creating and crafting pre-fab items for building your 3D realms.  A truly innovative program, the original from The Game Creators' website, and one that we have used for much of our demos and other 3D worlds.  With a world of add-ons, there's nothing this simple IDE can't handle.
3D Creation, Rendering and Animation
www.caligari.com
trueSpace has always been on my computers for years, starting with tS3.2, and this package kept getting better and more expensive with each passing year, as their older stuff became FREE.  Now, in their last years of publishing, Caligari Corp has lifted the price on ALL of their assets for this, latest and greatest, version of their 3D IDE.
You, too, can tie "TurboSquid Tentacles" to this, as well, for additional assets, add-ons, plug-ins and specialized shaders-- though, these other assets may be FREE or purchased, this is a great way to extend tS7.6's usefulness.

Paint.Net
2D Small and Massive Scale Art Asset Rendering
www.getpaint.net
This little application is one powerful program.  Allowing for canvas sizes larger than 10,000x10,000 pixels, with certain add-ons and plug-ins, can also manipulate ".PSD", ".DDS" and other texture and picture formats.  This IMHO would consider this a FREE, LIGHT version, of PhotoShop.  I use this app for most of my bitmap fonts and other such 2D assets.
GIMP
2D Photo and Art Asset Rendering Package
www.gimp.org
This package, which is now free, has some cool features and is very similar in scope to PhotoShop.  Like their web page says:  "Why pay for PhotoShop when you can get everything PS does for FREE?"  Having colleagues tell me about the power of GIMP, I had to list it here.  Much of everything they do, they either do with GIMP or Paint.Net.
Adobe PhotoShop
2D Photo and Art Asset Rendering Packagewww.adobe.com/products/photoshop/photoshop/
I had to include this one...  Purists think PS is the 'end-all be-all' of the 2D- and photo-editing software.  Sorry Fanboys & Fangirls:  we do not have mommy and daddy's money, we do not earn 6-digit incomes, and we do not have the disposable income to pay 3 digits for this kind of superfluous memory-hogging software.  Everything PS does can be done with other packages.  (Well, with the exception of Microsoft Paint, of course.  LOL)
PaintShop Pro
2D Photo and Art Asset Rendering Packagewww.corel.com
Formerly Jasc Paint Shop, Corel's Paint Shop Pro X2 is the next in a long line of 2D photo and picture editing software.  This package does the same things that Adobe's entry does, but for about 10% the price, in most cases.  I have not used this, but have colleagues who have and they swear by it.
